Under the law, a driver's license is a privilege and not a right. However, those of us living in the Kansas City area understand how critical a driver's license is for every day survival - to get us to and from our jobs, our children to daycare, or even to earn a living as a driver with a commercial driver's license (CDL). It is extremely important that you understand what you are charged with whenever you get a ticket from law enforcement.
Some of my clients often ask the following questions:
Is my ticket a moving violation?
Often it is difficult to tell if your ticket is a moving violation. I can help, and if it is a moving violation, I may be able tot help you avoid a conviction based on the ticket as it is charged.
Will this ticket affect my driving record or my insurance rates?
Odds are that if it is a moving violation, it will go on your driving record. If your insurance company charges higher rates for more moving violations, just paying your ticket without talking to a lawyer may affect your insurance rates.
Can this ticket suspend my driver's license? How many points do I get? Missouri drivers are on a points system. Kansas drivers are allotted a certain amount of moving violations. Each state has definitions for moving and points violations. It is crucial that you contact a lawyer to determine if you may get suspended because of your tickets. I can contact the state where you are licensed and help you determine what is in your best interest relating to your tickets. I can also explain your state's system for regulating driving records. You can also get additional information from my page about driving while suspended, or by clicking on my links to the Missouri Department of Revenue or the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Can I really go to jail over this ticket?
It is possible that you face jail time if you are charged with a ticket that is considered serious in the eyes of the law. These types of charges include driving while suspended or driving while revoked, DUI or DWI, and many other serious charges.
